0:05 It’s 2018, you’re 16 years old in this crazy world. What would you do to start a business to pay for college and you know, start your own gig?
0:30 I wouldn’t start a business at the age of 16. Here’s where I think most people make a mistake. If you’re watching and you’re young or even if you’re older, and you’re 16, 17, maybe even 20, I made a lot of mistakes when I was younger. I failed.
1:00 I believe in this concept called intrapreneurship where you can be an entrepreneur within a company. I wish I started my career working for someone, learning from them, that way I know what mistakes and what not to do. I’ll try to be a entrepreneur within a organization and a lot of em encourage it. Like Google has this thing where I think it’s about 20% of the time, what is it David, 20%? 30% of the time? 20% of the time, you should be doing your own personal projects. Companies encourage it.
1:30 So, I would go find a company even if it’s virtual, hit up a lot of people, volunteer, work for free for a month or two, intern, and then eventually convince people to pay me, work for em, be the apprentice, learn a lot from them, once you feel you’re not learning enough, go be apprentice to someone else and go hop around, learn as much as you can and then eventually ya know, once you feel you’re ready and you’ve learned a lot, then go start your own business. That’s the key.
2:00 If you start when you’re 16, 17, good for you, go at it. You can, there’s nothing wrong with that. I did it, a lot of other people do. But you make a lot of mistakes. It’s very rare to see the Mark Zuckerbergs of the world. Even I’m nowhere near as successful as his. I’m not even one 1,000 or whatever you wanna call it of his success when it comes to a monetary standpoint. But when you look at people like that, they’re very rare, even I’m rare. You’re better off and I’m not saying you can’t do what Mark did or what I did or anyone else, but you’d be better off and I believe you would get further in your career and do better as a entrepreneur if you learn from others first ’cause you know what not to do and then go out on your own and then start.
2:30 Plus you built up a relationship, some networking, a good group where you can hit people up for money. You can have more business development relationships, partnerships just because you have a stronger networking group and circle of people who can help you versus if you just went out on your own at the age of 16 and you’re starting from scratch and you had to try to figure it all out.
